Italian Style Steak Sandwich

A delicious take on my steak sandwich!

This version of my steak sandwich gives the OG a good run for it’s money!

There is caramelised onions and capsicum, rocket, melted mozzarella and my secret ingredient - pesto! I always use Turkish bread for my steak sandwiches as I feel like it makes them, but you could also use an Italian style bread like a ciabatta!

I also like to use eye fillet steak as it is super tender when cooked - which I think is important when making a steak sandwich as you don’t want it to be too tough to chew. It is expensive though, so a cheaper option would be scotch fillet!

Hope you love it as much as we did!

Prep Time: 10 min

Cooking Time: 20 min

Serves: 2

Ingredients:

  • Turkish bread

  • Eye fillet steak x 2

  • 1 red onion, sliced into thin rounds

  • 1 red capsicum, cut into thin strips

  • 1 TBS brown sugar

  • 1 TBS balsamic vinegar

  • Rocket

  • Pesto - I used Roza’s Gourmet Pesto

  • Shredded mozzarella

Method:

Ideally, get your steak out of the fridge 2 hours before to bring to room temp

Cut the onions into thin rounds, and the capsicum into thin strips

Heat a pan over a medium/high heat and add some olive oil. Cook the onions and capsicum with a lid on for 10 mins - this allows them to sweat and become sweeter

Add the brown sugar and balsamic vinegar and stir until combined. Cook for further few mins

Heat a pan over a high heat until smoking

Rub olive oil, salt and pepper into each side of the steaks

Cook steaks for 3.5-4 minutes each side and then move to a plate and cover with foil. Rest for 5 minutes - do not skip this step!!!

Meanwhile place your Turkish bread under the grill with a heaped amount of mozzarella on the top piece, until toasted and melted

Once the steak has rested, cut into thin slices

Spread pesto on the bottom and then top with rocket, steak, onions and capsicums and the top bun

Serve & Enjoy!
